[TRIGGER WARNING: This article talks about s*uic*de]

It is not just being selfish.

I'm currently following this psychotherapist on TikTok, where he uploads parts of his talk regarding depression and suicide.

He says that the voice that you hear (at the moment of contemplating whether to do it or not), which tells you that "when you do this, all your pain will go away," has a deeper meaning than you think.

Basically, what he means is that when we experience something bad in our lives, we tend to "pretend" that everything's ok. We want to show that we're doing well and that we're fine. But then, unconsciously, depression starts to kick in, and we're just denying it. If this is not addressed, we just realized that this state will cause us to spiral even further into depression until we can't handle it anymore.

Then, if the source of our depression is also coming from self-hatred and shame, this "voice" would tell you that

"the longer that you're here, the more you hurt the people that you love the most, so the kindest thing you can do is LEAVE."

It really then shows that you REALLY care so much so that you're willing to take the pain and suffer for those people because you know that you're already becoming a burden to them.

Honestly, I was taken aback when I realized this. Because all the while, I thought that when someone plans or commits to unaliving themselves, we tend to somehow "judge" that person, saying how "selfish" and "inconsiderate" he or she is, not knowing that in their head, they think that when they are out of the picture, everything will go back to normal.

But it's not.

You see, people who suffer from depression and plan to end it all have this two-way thinking:

"I don't want to burden you anymore; go away; you've done enough."

But deep inside, they want the opposite.

They don't want to be left alone. They want to be valued and loved, and that they realize that there are people who don't give up on them.

Taking your own life will never be a good option. I hope that you also don't give up on yourself. Continue to reach out, and someone will surely find you. 💙
