Yakal Street, Makati

(April 5, 2024)

RATING: ❤️❤️/5

==========

I decided to go to this place when I saw a TikTok video of this café as it was highly rated. It was lunchtime when I arrived, which is why it was crowded. The majority of the customers I noticed, were foreigners. The overall vibe is okay.

==========

🏢DESIGN

While the café is said to have a Vietnamese motif, I didn’t notice any specific displays that reflected the theme. Instead, the space features couches and stair-like seats for solo diners, cement-finished walls, and a touch of modern architecture. The TikTok video I saw also mentioned that the café is open 24/7—a huge plus for late-night workers or night-shift employees. Outlets are available at certain spots, making it convenient for customers who need to charge their laptops while working.

😋 TASTE

I ordered their standard iced latte in a large size, but I was a little surprised by the serving glass—it didn’t quite match the size I was expecting. The flavor itself wasn’t particularly remarkable. The tables are placed fairly close to one another, so this isn’t the best spot for introverts or anyone who wants quiet, private time—you can easily hear other customers’ conversations.

 🧭 LOCATION

Pao Café is situated behind the Makati Fire Station, which makes it a bit of a challenge to reach on foot from Glorietta or the Makati Central Business District. While there is a footbridge to cross over the busy pedestrian areas, the walk is still considerable.

💸 PRICE & SERVICE

Prices are reasonable despite the modern interior design, which at first glance seems to target high-ranking professionals like executives and managers. The menu is extensive without being overwhelming.

As for service, my experience fell short. When I entered, I wasn’t acknowledged—not that I expected VIP treatment, but a simple greeting goes a long way. At the counter, no one took my order right away, and instead, the two staff members in front of me were engaged in a personal conversation about their grievances. This was not only unprofessional but also left a poor first impression.

📋CONCLUSION

Improving customer service should be a priority—welcoming guests promptly and maintaining professionalism would greatly enhance the overall dining experience. Strengthening the café’s Vietnamese theme through clearer décor elements could also make its identity more distinct and memorable.

That said, Pao Café is still worth a visit if you’re looking to explore new coffee spots in Makati. It’s a comfortable place to spend long hours with friends or co-workers, enjoying Vietnamese-inspired dishes at affordable prices. Just keep in mind that the atmosphere leans more toward lively and social rather than quiet and secluded.
